Suryakumar Yadav is enjoying his time as India T20 captain and dropped enough hints on Saturday about his ambitions of leading an IPL franchise in near future.
Suryakumar Yadav has reported at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.
While Suryakumar has been a cornerstone of India’s T20I batting line-up over the past three and a half years, he has yet to secure a regular spot in the Test squad.
In an exclusive interview with Moneycontrol, Dav Whatmore, a man with rich coaching experience, expressed that the all-rounder could still become the skipper in the long future.
Having played 71 T20Is, Yadav has amassed 2,432 runs at an average of 42.67. His 5 Player of the Series awards highlight his consistency and crucial contributions to the Indian cricket team.
Suryakumar, who pipped T20 WC vice-captain Hardik Pandya for India captaincy, said the all-rounder’s role will remain the same.
Optimistic and ready to embrace the challenge, Suryakumar Yadav will lead the team in a three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. He was chosen for the role over Hardik Pandya.
Team India is scheduled to compete in 3 T20Is and 3 ODIs against Sri Lanka, with the series starting on July 27 and concluding on August 7.
While Hardik Pandya boasts of a rich CV as captain, BCCI felt right to move forward with Suryakumar Yadav as the new leader in the shorter format.
This isn't Surya's first stint as skipper of the India T20I side. Following the 2023 ODI World Cup, he led India in the T20I series against Australia and South Africa.
Hardik Pandya and Natasa Stankovic announce separation: Putting an end to the speculations, the cricketer shared a note on Instagram on Thursday evening confirming the same.
India squad vs Sri Lanka announced: On expected lines Suryakumar Yadav will lead the team in shorter format, with Shubman Gill being promoted as the vice-captain.
Suryakumar Yadav, the current No. 1 ranked T20I batter, is being preferred over the premier all-rounder, despite Hardik's CV boasting of a rich experience.
While the team has no dearth in talent to fill up the big boots of Rohit and Kohli, the question which hogs most limelight is the choice of leadership.
The men in blue, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, ended a long 17-year wait since their inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup win by clinching the 2024 title.
The joy of winning the T20 World Cup was palpable, with Rohit himself joining in the dancing for a while. Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya also couldn't resist joining in with some dance moves.
In a dramatic T20 World Cup final, Suryakumar Yadav's stunning last-over catch against South Africa in Barbados secured India's victory by 7 runs, ending an 11-year ICC trophy drought.
Suryakumar Yadav's crucial catch in the final over encapsulated judgment, composure, and athleticism, as he secured the dismissal of David Miller.
Surya not only dodged and pushed the limits. He defied imagination. An artful act defined by bravery and on-the-spot intelligence, one won’t see this every now and then.
Mumbai Indians' top players Rohit Sharma and Surya Kumar Yadav recently shared a touching moment with a differently-abled fan, underscoring the bond between athletes and supporters while shedding light on the players' off-field compassion.
