Congress, TMC and Left members urged Speaker Sumitra Mahajan not to allow Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to introduce the Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Bill saying it will otherwise set a "bad precedent". But she overruled their objections
"For the greater interest of Parliamentary democracy, we are opposed to suspension of 25 Lok Sabha MPs. We are not attending Lok Sabha from tomorrow," Bandyopadhyay said in a statement.
Congress-led opposition parties continued to stall the proceedings of Parliament, inviting the ire of Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, who went on to suspend at least 25 opposition MPs for five days.
Opposition members insisted that the 122nd Constitutional Amendment Bill be referred to the Standing Committee on Finance as it was a new bill as opposed to the one brought by the UPA government.
Members of Congress, led by Sonia Gandhi, along with those of TMC, Left and NCP staged a walk out after their plea for referring the Constitution Amendment Bill to the Standing Committee was not accepted. AIADMK and BJD also opposed its consideration but did not walk out.
