Meta-owned Instagram has remained a popular choice for content creators and influencers for a long time but the spread of generative AI has brought the use of AI-created art on Instagram into question. According to a report by Fast Company, several artists are ditching the image and video sharing app over concerns of their Instagram artwork being used by Meta to train its gen AI tools.

According to the report, Facebook-and-Instagram-owner Meta has been surreptitiously using Instagram posts to train its generative AI tool for the past few months, a news that has not sat well with the artists on the platform. Consequently, some artists have embraced an anti-AI app called Cara and deleted Instagram.

What’s the Cara app?

Cara is a social media and portfolio platform for artists and creative folks. Cara developers say that amidst the widespread use of Gen AI, they decided “to build a place that filters out generative AI images so that people who want to find authentic creatives and artwork can do so easily.”

Cara devs claim that they will protect artists’ images on Cara platform from being used to train Gen AI models. However, AI content is not completely banned from the platform. Cara allows AI content on its platform that’s clearly labeled as one. The Cara app is available both on desktop and mobile and is free to use.

Such a move by the Cara app has caused artists to flock over from Instagram on to Cara. As per the report, “between May 31 and June 2, Cara’s user base tripled from less than 100,000 to more than 300,000 profiles, skyrocketing to the top of the app store.”

Features of Cara app

Cara uses an AI image detector and filtering tool to check for and reject images created with the help of AI. Hence, AI-generated images are not allowed in an artist’s portfolio.

Artists can customise their home feed and set a certain percentage to the type of posts they want to see more (or less). This rule is applicable to the posts of the people you follow, their own network and content distributed across the Cara platform.

On Cara, you can separate your work from the social media feed. Plus, there are Jobs Boards, Animated GIF covers, Multi-video and Sketchfab Embeds, and more.
