Aman Gottumukkala, an Indian-origin software engineer and entrepreneur, has joined Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI. The Texas-based developer is widely known for co-founding Firebender, a startup that created an AI-powered coding assistant for Android developers.
Announcing the move in a post on X, Gottumukkala said he would work with teams associated with xAI and SpaceX to build advanced artificial intelligence systems capable of writing software automatically. The aim is to develop coding AI tools that can handle programming tasks and support developers in building applications faster.
Founder of Firebender
Gottumukkala gained recognition in the developer community after launching Firebender, an AI coding assistant built specifically for Android developers.
The platform helps programmers generate code, automate development tasks and manage workflows inside development tools such as Android Studio and JetBrains IDEs. By integrating directly with these platforms, Firebender assists developers in writing and organising code more efficiently.
The startup reportedly generated millions in revenue despite operating with a team of only three people. This rapid growth helped the company attract attention in the developer ecosystem.
Firebender was built through Y Combinator, a startup accelerator known for supporting early-stage technology companies.
Education and early career
Gottumukkala completed a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Texas A&M University between 2017 and 2021. Before attending the university, he studied at the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science, a specialised programme focused on advanced STEM education.
Before starting Firebender, he worked as a software engineer at Paradigm, where he contributed to technology and crypto-related projects.
He is also a KP Fellow, a programme that connects engineers and founders with venture capital firms and startup mentors in Silicon Valley.
Work at xAI
At xAI, Gottumukkala is expected to focus on building AI systems designed to automate software development. In his announcement, he noted that the capabilities of AI models have been advancing rapidly in recent years.
He described the development of advanced coding AI as a major technological challenge that requires significant computing resources and engineering talent.
With his move to xAI, Gottumukkala joins a team working on artificial intelligence research as the company expands its efforts to develop new AI systems.
