WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will allow users to share motion photos in chats, groups, and channels. The feature, currently in development, was spotted in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.8.12 by WABetaInfo. If you are unaware, Motion photos capture a brief moment of movement before and after a still image is taken, offering an enhanced media-sharing experience.
How motion photos work on WhatsApp
Motion photos, already available on devices like Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel, and Apple iPhones, combine a static image with a short video clip. On iOS, this format is known as Live Photos, and WhatsApp already supports it on Apple devices. The new Android feature will allow users to share motion photos similarly.
With the update, users will see a new button in the gallery sheet, giving them the option to send either a static image or the motion photo version. When shared, recipients will be able to view the motion photo in its animated form, even if their device does not natively support motion photos.
Availability and limitations
The feature is currently under development and is not yet available for beta testers. WhatsApp has not announced a release date, but once ready, it is expected to work across individual chats, groups, and channels. To access real-time updates and additional WhatsApp features, users can follow the app’s beta development through the Google Play Beta Program.
The feature is expected to roll out to more beta users in the coming weeks and is likely to arrive to all users wit future updates.
