Sony has announced a price increase for its PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States, effective from August 21. The company cited “a challenging economic environment” as the reason, following the White House’s recent 15% tariff on Japanese imports.
With the change, the standard PlayStation 5 will now cost $549.99, the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition $499.99, and the PlayStation 5 Pro $749.99. Sony confirmed that prices for accessories will remain unchanged and there are no immediate plans to alter console prices in other regions.
This marks the first US price hike for the PlayStation 5, though Sony previously raised console prices in Europe, Australia and New Zealand earlier this year under similar conditions. Back in 2022, Sony had also adjusted prices in some international markets due to inflation, though US buyers were unaffected at that time.
The wider gaming industry is also responding to tariff pressures. Microsoft said in May it would raise console prices by $80 to $100, along with selected games and accessories. Nintendo, meanwhile, has raised the cost of accessories for its upcoming Switch 2 console but kept the console price unchanged.
Summary:
Sony is increasing US prices of the PlayStation 5 from August 21, with the PS5 Pro set at $749.99, citing tariffs on Japanese imports. Accessories remain unaffected, while other regions will not see changes for now.
