GTA 6 developer Rockstar Games is reportedly working on building user-generated custom game experiences akin to those seen in Roblox and Fortnite inside the upcoming open-world game, according to a report from Digiday. It looks like the Grand Theft Auto developer wants to transition the highly-awaited open-world game to a full-fledged creator platform.
As per the report, Rockstar has already interacted with top Fortnite and Roblox content creators and dedicated “GTA” creators to modify the game environment of GTA 6 to build a customised in-game experience. The report is based on anonymous citations from three industry insiders about the meeting.
Over the years, GTA 5 has seen a lot of interest from modders. An example of a popular game mod in the GTA universe is FiveM, a GTA 5 mod. The GTA 5 mod allows players to host and join multiplayer servers. On these servers, hundreds of players can play at the same time.
“Although Rockstar initially banned some of FiveM’s creators in 2015, the developer later acquired their company in 2023, signaling its tacit approval of the “GTA RP [role play]” community”, adds the report. Rockstar Games also acquired CFX.RE, creators of GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2’s most popular modding tools, in 2023.
What’s in it for creators besides watching their intellectual properties become a game experience inside GTA 6? They would, of course, earn revenue when someone buys their game-related virtual product. Plus, more moolah can come their way through revenue-sharing deals.
As per the report, "the “GTA” servers hosted on FiveM charge users subscription fees to participate”, which is not the case with gaming platforms like Roblox and Fortnite. User-generated content (or UGC) could shoot up the earnings of Rockstar since with UGC, GTA 6 would grow to become more than just a popular (and hopefully, best-selling) game.
However, the report by Digiday adds that Rockstar’s conversations with content creators have remained “relatively open-ended”.
“It’s unclear exactly how creators would benefit from bringing their IP and audiences into GTA 6, beyond the exposure that would come from having a presence inside one of the world’s most popular gaming properties,” says the report.
