Razorpay, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and OpenAI have partnered to pilot a new feature called Agentic Payments on ChatGPT, allowing users to complete online purchases directly within the AI chatbot.
The initiative, currently in the pilot stage, will enable users to discover products and services, compare prices, and make payments through UPI without leaving the ChatGPT interface.
What are some common use-cases?The feature is being tested for use cases such as ordering groceries and paying for digital services.
According to details shared by the companies, the system integrates Razorpay’s payment infrastructure, NPCI’s UPI network, and OpenAI’s conversational models.
OpenAI's UPI journeyTo be sure, OpenAI introduced shopping features on ChatGPT in April 2025. They introduced an instant checkout feature in the US last month, that allows people to make Etsy purchases and soon from Shopify as well. They had partnered with Stripe.
OpenAI's partnership with Razorpay comes at a time when Stripe’s UPI payment failure in August marred ChatGPT’s India-specific payment plan launch on August 19.
The customers trying for UPI payment could not make the payment since the afternoon.

For instance, a user can ask ChatGPT to order ingredients for a Thai-style vegetable curry from BigBasket. The AI assistant would fetch product options, confirm the selection, and initiate payment through Razorpay’s stack. Users will have access to tracking and instant cancellation features.
The collaboration is aimed at testing how conversational AI can streamline commerce and payments. Further expansion will depend on the results of the ongoing pilot and regulatory clearances.
ChatGPT has over 800 million users and India is their second largest market, and the company expects India to soon be their biggest market.
