First-person co-op demon-slaying shooter Painkiller has been delayed. The reimagined version of Painkiller for PC and consoles will now launch on October 21 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (via Steam), developer Anshar Studios and publisher 3D Realms announced.
The Painkiller remake is co-published by Saber Interactive, makers of titles like World War Z and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and 3D Realms. The game supports cooperative gameplay for up to 3 players and also has an offline mode.
The Painkiller reboot is set in Purgatory, where you can play as one of the four Champions: Ink, Void, Sol and Roch. As per the game’s lore, the Creator gives you a chance to redeem yourself or "be lost to darkness". Your task is to stop the demonic armies of the fallen angel Azazel from destroying Earth.
Each Painkiller Champion comes with unique perks. To gain the upper hand on the enemies, players can make use of tarot cards in the game to enhance their abilities and combine them with others.
Painkiller remake: The “Rogue Angel” game mode
Alongside confirming the release date, the developers also announced a new game mode for Painkiller called the “Rogue Angel” mode.
Painkiller’s Rogue Angel mode is set in a new realm of Purgatory that’s not featured in the game’s main campaign. In this realm, you and your teammates will have to explore new procedurally generated arenas with new game bosses. You get to collect tarot cards, weapons, and items as you progress.
In the Rogue Angel mode, “unpredictable drops and brutal enemies” will be waiting for players. “Each death offers a lesson. Every run improves your skills. Every step brings you closer to becoming unstoppable,” said the developers in a post on Steam.
