OpenAI has launched a new deep research tool that has the ability to conduct multi-step research on the internet for complex tasks. According to a blog post by OpenAI, it can accomplish in tens of minutes what would take a human many hours.
What is the new research tool?
As per OpenAI, deep research is OpenAI's next agent that can do work for you independently. All you need to do is give a prompt, and ChatGPT will find, analyse, and synthesise hundreds of online sources to create a comprehensive report at the level of a research analyst.
The tool will be powered by a version of the upcoming OpenAI o3 model that’s optimised for web browsing and data analysis. According to OpenAI, it leverages reasoning to search, interpret, and analyze massive amounts of text, images, and PDFs on the internet, pivoting as needed in reaction to information it encounters.
How to use deep research tool
In ChatGPT, navigate to the message composer and select ‘deep research’. Enter your query and specify your requirements, whether it’s a competitive analysis of streaming platforms or a personalized report on the best commuter bike. Feel free to attach files or spreadsheets to provide additional context to your question. As the process begins, a sidebar will appear, displaying a summary of the steps taken and the sources utilized.
According to OpenAI, Deep research may take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes to complete its work, taking the time needed to dive deep into the web. “The final output arrives as a report within the chat,” says OpenAI.
OpenAI will also be adding embedded images, data visualizations, and other analytic outputs in these reports for additional clarity and context.
Currently, the feature is available for only ChatGPT Pro users and will arrive for ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Team users soon.
