Remember when OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman was suddenly fired and then brought back just five days later? That real-life rollercoaster is now being turned into a movie and we are not surprised.
The film is called Artificial and is reportedly being developed by Amazon MGM Studios, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It’s going to tell the story of those dramatic days in November 2023 when the tech world was left completely shocked.
The movie might actually be funny too. The screenplay is written by Saturday Night Live writer Simon Rich, which means it’ll likely have a fun and quirky vibe, even though it’s about some serious boardroom drama.
Famous director Luca Guadagnino, who made Call Me by Your Name and Challengers, is in talks to direct the film. As for the cast, Andrew Garfield is being considered to play Sam Altman. Monica Barbaro might play Mira Murati, the former CTO who stepped in briefly as CEO. And Yura Borisov could play Ilya Sutskever, the OpenAI co-founder who played a key role in Altman’s firing.
So what actually happened back then? On November 17, 2023, OpenAI’s board suddenly fired Altman, saying they didn’t trust his leadership anymore. The move shocked the entire tech industry. But things moved fast, after a lot of back-and-forth, and with employees and investors pushing for his return, Altman was back as CEO just five days later.
It was a dramatic, confusing, and kind of wild week and now it’s heading to the big screen. With comedy, big stars, and a story straight from real life, Artificial might just be one of the most entertaining tech movies yet.
