  • OpenAI plans to double workforce to nearly 8,000 by year-end
  • Hiring targets engineering, product, research, and sales roles
  • Focus turns to enterprise use and broader ChatGPT features

OpenAI is preparing a major hiring drive as it looks to expand its workforce and respond to growing competition in the artificial intelligence sector. The company plans to increase its employee count from about 4,500 to nearly 8,000 by the end of the year, according to reports. This translates to adding roughly a dozen employees each day as part of a broader strategy to strengthen its position across product, research, and enterprise segments.

Hiring focus areas

The hiring push will largely target roles in engineering, product development, research, and sales. A key focus area is the expansion of “technical ambassadors,” professionals embedded within client organisations to help businesses deploy and optimise OpenAI’s tools. This approach reflects a wider shift towards enterprise adoption, where companies are seeking customised AI solutions and closer support.

OpenAI is also expanding its physical footprint to support the growing workforce, including securing additional office space. The company’s hiring strategy indicates a move to scale both its consumer and enterprise offerings simultaneously.

Rising competition in AI

The hiring surge comes at a time when OpenAI is facing pressure from competitors. Anthropic has been gaining traction among enterprise customers, with some data suggesting that new business users are opting for its solutions at a higher rate. At the same time, Google continues to compete aggressively in the consumer space with its chatbot and AI tools.

This dual pressure has created a competitive environment where OpenAI needs to maintain relevance across both segments without losing ground in either.

Strategic reset and priorities

Internally, OpenAI has reportedly shifted focus back to its core product, ChatGPT. Leadership has urged teams to prioritise key areas such as improving coding capabilities, strengthening enterprise adoption, and enhancing productivity-focused features. The company is also exploring partnerships and joint ventures to expand the reach of its AI tools across industries. The hiring plan reflects OpenAI’s attempt to balance innovation, scale, and market competition as the AI landscape continues to evolve.
