OpenAI has announced that users in India will get free access to ChatGPT Go for one year, starting November 4. The offer coincides with the company’s first DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru, also scheduled for the same day.

What is ChatGPT Go?

ChatGPT Go is a subscription-based version of ChatGPT that provides users with enhanced features and more powerful tools. It runs on OpenAI’s latest GPT-5 model and includes higher message limits, more daily image generations, longer memory, and the ability to upload files and images for analysis.

Essentially, it gives users a more capable version of ChatGPT — one that can handle complex queries, create visuals, and maintain better context across longer conversations.

Why India is getting it for free

OpenAI says it has been inspired by the enthusiasm and creativity of Indian users since ChatGPT Go launched in August. According to the company, India is now ChatGPT’s second-largest and one of its fastest-growing markets. Within a month of launch, the number of paid ChatGPT subscribers in India more than doubled.

Nick Turley, vice president and head of ChatGPT, said, “Ahead of our first DevDay Exchange event in India, we’re making ChatGPT Go freely available for a year to help more people across India easily access and benefit from advanced AI.”

The free offer will be available to all users in India who sign up during the limited promotional period. Even existing ChatGPT Go subscribers will be eligible, though OpenAI says more details will be shared soon.

OpenAI’s India presence

This initiative is part of OpenAI’s India-first strategy, which supports the government’s IndiaAI Mission aimed at expanding AI adoption across sectors. The company is also partnering with educational institutions, civil society organisations, and government programs to promote responsible and inclusive AI use.

OpenAI has already announced plans to open offices in New Delhi and Bengaluru, following a similar move by rival Anthropic, whose CEO Dario Amodei recently met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the company’s expansion plans.

The one-year free access to ChatGPT Go marks a major push to make AI tools more accessible — and signals how crucial India has become to OpenAI’s next phase of growth.
