The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a revamped Aadhaar app in beta, designed to enhance security and convenience in Aadhaar-based identity verification. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw unveiled the app during the Aadhaar Samvaad event held in Delhi. The app is currently available to a limited group of users – in Early Access on Android.
This means users can now head to Pthe lay Store and download the app to try out its new features and services related to Aadhaar.
New Aadhaar app key features
The new Aadhaar app introduces facial authentication as a major feature, allowing users to verify their identity without sharing a physical Aadhaar card or photocopy. Instead, individuals can scan a QR code and authenticate their identity using their phone’s camera and face scan, eliminating the need for printed documents at hotels, airports, and other institutions.
UIDAI said the facial recognition functionality has already been in use through the AadhaarFaceRD app for KYC (Know-Your-Customer) purposes. The process involves scanning a QR code and blinking in front of the camera to complete verification. So far, over 15 crore facial authentications have been carried out, while fingerprint and OTP-based authentications remain at over 8 crore per day.
Availability and beta access
The beta version of the new Aadhaar app is currently accessible to a closed group of early adopters, including all registered participants of the Aadhaar Samvaad event. UIDAI confirmed that wider access will follow after incorporating feedback from users and ecosystem partners.
