Meta is turning all Facebook videos into Reels: Here’s what that means for you

Meta is making a major change to how you post and watch videos on Facebook. In the coming months, all videos shared on Facebook—whether short or long—will automatically be published as Reels. That means no more choosing between uploading a regular video or a Reel. Everything becomes a Reel.

So, what changes for you? For starters, the video posting process is getting a lot simpler. Instead of using different tools to create a video or a Reel, Facebook is merging everything into one streamlined publishing flow. You’ll also get access to more creative tools to edit, enhance, and share your videos.

No time limits, no format restrictions

Unlike traditional Reels that had time limits, the new system won’t place any restrictions on video length or format. Whether you’re sharing a quick 30-second clip or a 10-minute tutorial, it’ll all be treated the same.

Your audience settings stay in your hands

Meta is also syncing privacy settings across Feed posts and Reels. So if your current audience for Feed posts is set to “Friends,” that will also be the default for your Reels—unless you change it. You’ll get a prompt to confirm or update your settings the first time you post after the switch. Whether you want to share with just a few friends or go public to reach a wider audience, the choice is still yours.

The Video tab gets a new name

As part of the update, Facebook’s “Video” tab is being renamed the “Reels” tab. But don’t worry—this doesn’t mean Facebook is ditching longer videos or Live content. You’ll still see videos of all lengths, tailored to your interests. This move is more about creating a unified video experience than restricting the kind of content you see.

What happens to your old videos?

Nothing. Videos you’ve already posted will remain on your profile or Page. They won’t be converted into Reels retroactively. But from now on, anything new you upload will be a Reel by default.

In a nutshell: Meta wants to simplify how videos work on Facebook, and Reels are at the heart of that strategy. The company says this change will help creators and users connect more easily, discover new content, and share what they love—without the confusion of multiple formats.
