Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is going all-in on artificial intelligence — and this time, he’s doing it himself. According to a Bloomberg report, Zuckerberg is building a brand-new AI team with one bold mission: to create “superintelligence”, machines that could one day outthink humans.
And he’s not just forming any team, he’s reportedly offering some of the highest paychecks in the industry, possibly even hitting nine figures for the right researchers.
Why the urgency? Zuckerberg is reportedly unhappy with Meta’s current AI progress, especially the development of its latest model, Llama 4. While Meta has integrated AI into its platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and even Ray-Ban smart glasses, it’s still trailing behind rivals like OpenAI, which leads the space with ChatGPT.
Zuckerberg has taken matters into his own hands. He’s been meeting with top AI experts at his homes in California and has reshuffled Meta’s headquarters in Menlo Park to set up this new AI team right near his office. He plans to hire around 50 people for this mission.
A major name involved in the project is Alexandr Wang, CEO of Scale AI, a company that could receive billions in investment from Meta. And how will this ambitious AI dream be funded? Through Meta’s gigantic ad business, according to insiders.
Meta’s competitors aren’t sitting still either. Google, Microsoft, Apple, Elon Musk’s xAI, and others are racing toward AI breakthroughs, each with their own strategies. Zuckerberg hopes to stand out by keeping Meta’s Llama AI open source, allowing developers around the world to build on it — much like Android did for mobile.
