  • Intel launches Core Ultra 200S Plus desktop processors
  • Core Ultra 7 270K Plus: 24 cores; Ultra 5 250K Plus: 18 cores
  • New chips offer up to 15 percent higher gaming performance

Intel has announced the new Core Ultra 200S Plus series desktop processors, expanding its Core Ultra desktop lineup with the Core Ultra 7 270K Plus and Core Ultra 5 250K Plus models. The new processors introduce additional cores, higher die-to-die frequency and updated optimisation tools aimed at gaming and content creation workloads.

According to the company, the new chips are designed for enthusiast desktop users who require higher multithreaded performance and improved gaming capabilities. The processors also bring architectural refinements and support for faster memory compared to the earlier Core Ultra 200S desktop series.

Intel says the Core Ultra 200S Plus processors can deliver up to 15 percent higher gaming performance compared to existing Core Ultra Series 2 desktop processors. The company also claims the processors can offer up to 103 percent higher multithread performance compared to competing CPUs in similar segments.

Key features

The Core Ultra 200S Plus processors introduce more efficiency cores compared to previous models. The Core Ultra 7 270K Plus includes a total of 24 cores made up of eight performance cores and sixteen efficiency cores. The Core Ultra 5 250K Plus comes with 18 cores, including six performance cores and twelve efficiency cores.

Intel has also increased the die-to-die frequency by up to 900MHz compared to the earlier Core Ultra 7 265K and Core Ultra 5 245K processors. The higher frequency improves communication between the compute tile and the memory controller, which can reduce latency and improve gaming performance.

Another addition is the Intel Binary Optimization Tool. Intel describes it as a binary translation layer that can improve processor performance in certain games by optimising workloads at runtime. The tool works with applications that may have originally been optimised for other x86 processors or earlier architectures.

The processors also support DDR5 memory speeds of up to 7200 MT/s, compared to 6400 MT/s on earlier Core Ultra 200S processors.

Intel says the Core Ultra 200S Plus processors are part of its roadmap for enthusiast desktop platforms, focusing on higher gaming performance, increased multithread throughput and new optimisation technologies. The chips will be compatible with existing Intel Core Ultra 200 series desktop platform components.
