Instagram’s new reposting and map features are facing a ‘big’ backlash, here’s why

Instagram’s new repost and map features have triggered backlash online, with users accusing the platform of copying rivals like TikTok and Twitter.

Smaller creators lose access The update is a setback for smaller creators and everyday users — people who used to go live casually with friends or followers will now be blocked. Many feel it’s unfair, especially those still trying to grow their audience — and they’ve voiced frustration online.

Instagram has rolled out new features that include reposting, a location-sharing map, and updates to the ‘Friends’ tab. The platform now lets users share others’ public reels and posts with their followers and view friends’ content based on geographic locations. But instead of enthusiasm, these updates have sparked criticism, with users accusing Instagram of copying rival apps and disrupting the core experience.

What’s new on Instagram

The repost feature allows users to share any public reel or feed post directly to their profile. Reposted content appears in a new “Reposts” tab and can also show up in the main feed of followers. Users can add notes when reposting using a thought bubble icon. The goal is to help content reach broader audiences and extend its shelf life.

Meanwhile, the new Instagram Map shows posts shared by friends or creators from specific locations. It aims to blend social discovery with real-world places, letting users explore where others have been active.

Backlash from users

The new features haven’t gone down well with many users. On X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, lifestyle blogger Graceful Glam By Danielle wrote, “Is it just me, or is Instagram trying to be like TikTok with allowing reposts? 🧐”

Another user posted, “Instagram, I hate your new repost button. I keep clicking it. I don’t mean to click it. What if I click it and I don’t realise I’ve clicked it? The Insta algorithm is evil. I’m scared.”

Critics argue the repost button is easy to tap accidentally, risking unintended shares and cluttering profiles with duplicated content.

Some defend the feature

Not everyone sees it as a bad move. “It’s all about extending the life of content… tapping into user behaviour, not just views,” wrote user Sumedha (@sumedha2199). “Distribution is the only game that matters.”

Instagram is still testing some elements of its new ‘Friends’ section. Whether these changes stick may depend on how the platform responds to growing user concerns about usability and originality.
