Instagram adds support for 3:4 aspect ratio photos, so you won’t have to crop: Here’s how it works

In a notable update aimed at improving the user experience, Instagram has added support for 3:4 aspect ratio photos on the image and video sharing platform, which ensures users will now be able to upload photos to Instagram without cropping them. This change aligns with the default setting found on most smartphone cameras, which click images in a 3:4 aspect ratio.

How the 3:4 aspect ratio works

Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has shared a new announcement via Threads that photos taken in the 3:4 format will now appear on the platform exactly as captured. This new image ratio update will apply to both single-image posts and carousels, giving Instagram users and creators more flexibility in how they showcase their content. Further, Mosseri highlighted, “For those posting photos in 3:4, they will now be displayed just as you shot them.”

Until now, Instagram primarily supported square (1:1) and slightly vertical or taller (5:4 or 4:5) aspect ratio images, while users were required to crop default 3:4 images clicked from a smartphone. However, with this change, Instagram users will now be able to upload original quality images as opposed to stretching them to fit, ensuring a more direct, accurate translation of the original image.

In addition to this aspect ratio update, Instagram has also introduced a new Blend feature, which shows recommended reels in messages. It is currently an invite-only feed that shows users a personalised feed, based on their Instagram activity, and is available to users on Instagram for iOS and Android smartphones.
