Donald Trump is set to become the 47th president of the United States, defeating Kamala Harris with a sweep through the swing states of Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia. Interest in the US presidential election has been notably high in India over the past few days, according to data from Google Search trends. Surprisingly, in Tamil Nadu — Harris’s ancestral state — more people ended up searching for Trump than for the current US vice president.
Google Search trends data shows that searches for Trump were higher across all Indian states, including Tamil Nadu. In Tamil Nadu, searches for Harris were marginally higher on two days — November 2 and November 3. However, starting on November 4, Trump searches surged ahead of Harris, peaking on November 5 and 6.
According to Google, the “numbers represent search interest relative to the highest point on the chart for the given region and time. A value of 100 is the peak popularity for the term. A value of 50 means that the term is half as popular. A score of 0 means there was not enough data for this term.”
For Trump on November 6, search interest peaked at 100 on Google Trends, while Harris reached only 49. This was around the time news began circulating about Trump’s potential victory. Overall, in Tamil Nadu, Trump’s search interest averaged 9, while Harris’s was at 6.
