Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, on February 18 said India has the opportunity to become a global leader in applying artificial intelligence to science and medicine, and strengthen sectors such as agriculture and creative industries where AI is already being applied.
Speaking at a Google event in New Delhi, Hassabis sad, “My advice would be to double down on the things you are already strong at.” For instance, he said, applying AI to crop science, climate challenges and biological research could allow India to lead globally.
On the broader future of AI, Hassabis framed artificial general intelligence (AGI) not as a threat to human beings but as a powerful enhancement tool for people.
“At the moment, humans are still central — especially in science, where the hypothesis comes from people,” he said.
He estimated that truly general AI systems are still several years away, but noted that young people in countries like India will gain unprecedented access to advanced tools.
“This generation will have access to the most cutting-edge tools from anywhere in the world,” Hassabis said.
“If used well, that can accelerate science, creativity and opportunity on a scale we have never seen before,” he added.
