With the release of iOS 18.1, Apple has introduced a highly anticipated feature: the ability to record and transcribe phone calls directly from your iPhone. For years, Android phones have had the call recording feature but Apple had stayed away due to privacy concerns. However, now iPhone users can capture important conversations, interviews, or even personal calls, making it easier than ever to keep a record of the conversations.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use this feature:
- Ensure your iPhone is running iOS 18.1 or later.
- You can check for updates by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Head to Settings > Apps > Phone and toggle on the Call Recording option. This will allow you to record calls on your device.
- Make a call or answer an incoming call as you normally would. During the call, you’ll see a small waveform icon (a sound wave) in the top left corner of the screen.
- Tap the waveform icon to start recording. An automated voice will announce that the call is being recorded, ensuring transparency for both parties.
- The recording will automatically save to the Notes app when the call ends or when you stop the recording.
- To stop recording, tap the red Stop Recording button that replaces the waveform icon, or simply end the call.

Apple has also given a rather useful feature of transcribing the calls which you have recorded. The Notes app is where transcripts of all the recorded calls are stored. Here's how you can access call recordings:
- Open the Notes app and look for the Call Recordings folder.
- Here, you’ll find your recorded calls, complete with transcripts generated by Apple Intelligence.
- Tap on a recording to listen to the audio.
- You can also view the full transcript, a summary of the conversation, or share the recording with others.
