Google has rolled out a significant update to its mobile search experience in India with the introduction of Search Live in AI Mode. This feature allows users to interact with Google in real-time using voice commands or their phone’s camera, providing a more conversational and immersive search experience. India is the first country outside the US to receive this feature, which supports both English and Hindi.
Search Live enables users to speak directly to Google or show objects and scenes via the camera. The AI then responds with immediate spoken answers, and follow-up questions can be asked to continue the interaction. This makes the tool useful for a variety of scenarios, from following recipes and troubleshooting household issues to completing school assignments or exploring new locations. Conversations continue in the background, so users can multitask and use other apps while interacting with Google. Previous Search Live sessions can also be accessed through AI Mode history, providing continuity for ongoing queries.
Activating Search Live is straightforward. Begin by opening the Google app on your phone and tapping the Live icon located beneath the Search bar. First-time users will need to follow on-screen instructions to set up the feature. To ask questions using your voice, tap Unmute to activate the microphone and Mute to pause it. Users can say “stop” at any time to interrupt Google’s response. To interact via the camera, tap the Video icon and point your phone at the object or scene you wish to analyse. Conversations can be ended at any time by tapping Exit. Users can switch between AI Mode and a Live conversation by tapping the Live icon at any point. Google Lens also allows direct access to Search Live by tapping the Live option.
For users who prefer not to use Search Live, the feature can be disabled by turning off AI Mode. To do this, visit labs.google.com/search and follow the instructions to switch the feature off. Once disabled, Google will revert to the traditional search experience without live AI interaction.
