Google said that loading more results on the continuous scroll wasn’t too satisfactory for users on Search. The feature was first launched in 2021 on mobile and a year later on desktop.

The mindless scroll is everywhere. It began with Instagram and Facebook, moved to Twitter and even Google embraced it wholeheartedly.  However, it looks Google is set to drop the endless scroll in Search. According to a report by Search Engine Land, Google is putting an end to the continuous scroll feature in Search.

Google is switching back to the classic old pagination bar at the bottom of the page. According to the report, Google will first stop the continuous scroll feature on desktop and plans to eventually kill it on mobile as well.

On desktop, users will have the option to go a specific page of results or click “next” to see what’s on the next page. On mobile, there will be a “more results” button which will take users to the next page.

Why is Google going back to the old format?

As per the report, Google said that loading more results on the continuous scroll wasn’t too satisfactory for users on Search. Google also said that the move will allow it to serve results faster. The feature was first launched in 2021 on mobile and a year later on desktop.

Google hasn’t given clear date on when the feature will roll out on mobile but said it plans to do so in coming months. On desktop, users will be able to see the old pagination format starting today. We checked on Google Search and it still has the continuous scroll format, so it is expected to be a gradual roll out and should reach users in the coming days.
