Google is rolling out a significant update to the Play Store that introduces AI-powered features designed for gamers. At the centre of the update is a new overlay called Sidekick, which provides tools such as screenshots, video recording, YouTube streaming, and real-time assistance through Gemini Live.

Sidekick functions as a floating layer that can appear while playing games. It is conceptually similar to gaming modes already offered by smartphone makers like Vivo and OnePlus, which provide shortcuts for performance tuning and recording. However, Sidekick stands out by integrating Gemini, giving players access to live help and curated information without leaving the game.

For instance, a player stuck at a difficult level could ask Gemini for strategies, walkthroughs, or explanations. This avoids the need to pause the game and search online, streamlining the experience. By combining utility tools with conversational AI, Sidekick positions the Play Store as more than just a storefront, but as an active part of the gaming ecosystem.

The update also introduces new personalisation features. A “You” tab consolidates subscriptions, rewards, and recommendations across devices, making account management more seamless. Gamer profiles with AI avatars are also being introduced, allowing players to represent themselves with customised digital characters. These avatars can be personalised using AI-generated options, giving players more creative freedom.

Google is further expanding Play Games support across platforms. More than 200,000 mobile and PC titles will now be accessible, reflecting the company’s push to bridge gaming experiences across devices. This cross-platform approach is aimed at keeping players within Google’s ecosystem while offering more flexibility in how games are played.

The new features are rolling out initially in select regions this week, with broader availability expected from 1 October. While Sidekick may face overlap issues with built-in gaming modes on certain smartphones, the integration of AI gives it a distinctive edge.

By embedding Gemini into gaming, Google is attempting to position its ecosystem as essential for mobile gamers. The combination of real-time help, social features, and cross-platform integration marks a step towards making the Play Store not just a marketplace, but a full-fledged gaming hub.
