From screen time limits to safer content: OpenAI rolls out parental controls for ChatGPT

In an era where generative AI is moving into classrooms and daily life, OpenAI’s parental controls mark an effort to reassure families that teens can explore ChatGPT with a safety net in place.

OpenAI is introducing parental controls in ChatGPT, giving parents more oversight and teens stronger safeguards when using the AI. The update, rolling out today on the web and coming soon to mobile, allows parents and teens to link accounts — a move designed to balance safety with privacy.

What parents can do to make ChatGPT a 'safer' experience

Once linked, parents can fine-tune how their teens use ChatGPT. Among the most significant tools is the ability to reduce sensitive content, such as graphic material or viral challenges, a safeguard switched on by default when an account is linked. Parents can also manage whether ChatGPT remembers past conversations for personalised responses, or whether chats can be used for model training to improve the AI.

Other controls include Quiet Hours, which lets parents block access during certain times, as well as the option to disable voice mode and image generation. Together, these features aim to give families flexibility in tailoring the experience to their needs.

Importantly, parents won’t gain access to their teen’s conversations. The only exception is in rare situations where OpenAI’s systems — and trained reviewers — detect a serious safety risk. In such cases, parents may be notified, but only with the information necessary to support their teen’s wellbeing.

How does the setup work?

The setup requires consent on both sides. Either a parent or teen can send an invitation to link accounts, but the other must accept for parental controls to take effect. Teens are also able to disconnect their account, though parents will be notified if that happens.

OpenAI says the system was developed with input from experts, advocacy groups and policymakers, and stresses that these are early steps. The company expects to expand and refine parental controls over time. Alongside the launch, it has introduced a new resource hub for parents, designed to help families better understand how ChatGPT works and guide conversations around AI use at home.

In an era where generative AI is moving into classrooms and daily life, OpenAI’s parental controls mark an effort to reassure families that teens can explore ChatGPT with a safety net in place.
