Firefox unveils ‘AI Window’ with a user-first, fully optional approach to browser AI

Mozilla is doubling down on its promise to keep AI open, optional and firmly under user control. The company has announced its next big browser feature, the AI Window, a new intelligent space in Firefox designed to help users browse smarter

Mozilla has made its stance on AI clear: it should be built like the internet itself — open, accessible and driven by choice. In a fresh update, the company detailed how this philosophy is shaping the next evolution of Firefox. The upcoming AI Window will give users the ability to chat with an AI assistant and get contextual help while browsing, all behind a fully opt-in toggle.

The AI Window joins Firefox’s other lightweight AI touches, such as the sidebar chatbot on desktop and “Shake to Summarize” on iOS. The through-line across all of these features is control: users decide when, how, or whether to use AI. Mozilla says Firefox will never lock people into a single AI provider or ecosystem, nor will it embed AI in ways that force behaviour.

Unlike browsers built by AI companies that push an “all or nothing” model, Firefox aims to support every type of user. Some may want AI as part of everyday browsing. Others may only need it occasionally. And many are simply curious but hesitant to commit. With Firefox, all those scenarios are supported.

Users can continue browsing with the classic experience, switch to Private Window for maximum privacy, or opt into the new AI Window for a more personalised and intelligent layer on top of the web. Mozilla has opened sign-ups for early access, inviting users to test the feature and help shape development, staying true to its “building in the open” ethos.
