Losing an iPhone can be stressful — but Apple’s built-in tracking tools are designed to make recovery easier.

The Find My app, built into devices from Apple, allows users to locate iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watches and even accessories like AirTags on a map, remotely secure them or wipe their data.

Here’s how it works — and how to make sure you’re protected before anything goes missing.

Step 1: Make sure Find My is turned on

Find My must be enabled before a device is lost.

On an iPhone or iPad:

  • Open Settings
  • Tap your name at the top
  • Select Find My
  • Tap Find My iPhone Turn on:
  • Find My iPhone
  • Find My network
  • Send Last Location On a Mac:
  • Open System Settings
  • Click your name
  • Select iCloud
  • Turn on Find My Mac Without these settings activated, you won’t be able to track the device later.

Step 2: Locate your device on a map

If your device goes missing:

Open the Find My app on another Apple device

or

  • Visit iCloud.com and sign in
  • Select the Devices tab to see all linked hardware on a map.

If the device is online, you’ll see its real-time location. If it’s offline, the Find My network can still detect it using nearby Apple devices anonymously relaying its location.

Step 3: Play a sound to find nearby devices

If you’ve misplaced your device at home, tap Play Sound.

The device will emit a loud ping, even if it’s on silent mode — useful for finding phones buried in sofas or bags.

Step 4: Enable Lost Mode

If you believe the device is truly lost:

  • Select the device
  • Tap Mark As Lost
  • Add a contact number and message for the screen What does Lost Mode do

Lost Mode is a security feature that allows you to lock your device remotely if it is lost or stolen. Once activated, it disables Apple Pay to prevent unauthorized transactions, tracks and updates the device’s location so you can monitor its movements, and displays your contact information on the screen so that anyone who finds it can easily reach you.

Step 5: Erase as a last resort

If recovery seems unlikely, you can choose Erase This Device.

Erasing your device remotely deletes all personal data stored on it, removes any linked payment cards, and helps protect sensitive information from unauthorized access. However, once the device is erased, you can no longer track its location — unless it is still linked to your Apple ID and remains connected to a network.

Why Find My matters

Setting up these features in advance is crucial because many users only try to access Find My after their device has already been lost — and without prior activation, it won’t work. Enabling the Find My network, turning on Location Services, and setting up two-factor authentication ensures your device can be tracked, secured, and protected against loss or theft when it matters most.

In short, Find My isn’t just a convenience feature — it’s a security tool. And setting it up now could save you money, data and stress later.
