Dating

Fake profiles on dating apps are a big problem today and have always been one of the biggest challenges for such platforms. New research by Juleo in partnership with YouGov has revealed that around 78% of female users on such platforms encounter fake profiles.

Despite all the safety measures these platforms take to curb fake profile issues, the problem will never end unless you know how to identify fake profiles from genuine ones.

While there are no pre-defined ways to identify a fake profile on these platforms, there are some tips and tricks that can keep in mind to spot fake profiles.

Signs of a fake profile on dating apps

People who want to move to other platforms

The most common sign of a fake profile is when people quickly want to move to other modes of communication by leaving the app. Scammers usually do this to gain access to personal information like phone numbers, addresses, etc.

Stay away from profiles that are too good to be true

You will come across profiles that will appear to be too good, and will match your vibe. In case you match such people, you’ll find them too good to be true. To identify a fake profile check if they are being over caring, considerate and protective of you from the beginning.

Avoids meeting in-person

If you have matched a profile on a dating app and the person keeps ignoring the in-person meeting conversation or keeps saying that he/she wants to know you more than then meet up, it can be a fake profile.

Frequent cancellation of plans

Scammers usually cancel the plans that you’ve made together. They will usually be the first to make the plan and then cancel it at the last minute due to ‘xyz’ reasons.

Keeps asking for financial support

This is probably the biggest sign of a fake profile. Scammers usually want to benefit financially and to do this, they want to establish a relationship as soon as they can and then ask for financial support.

Asks too many personal questions in the initial phase
Stay away from people who are too friendly and get on board to the idea of sharing too much personal information. Things like they will ask details about address proof, Aadhaar card, Passport, Driving License, etc.
