X, which was formerly known as Twitter, has now updated its privacy policy to indicate that it would allow third-party ‘collaborators’ to train their AI (artificial intelligence) models on X data unless users opt out of this service. The main change here relates to granting permission for X to use your data in its AI training, and by accepting the terms, you’ve effectively permitted it to allow outside companies to access the data.
The platform has been sending notification pop-ups in the past few weeks to its users informing them of a change to its Terms of Service. The updated policy states: "Depending on your settings, or if you decide to share your data, we may share or disclose your information with third parties."
However, X has not informed whether its users can opt out of these terms and services in the future. This move can also be beneficial for creators on X as it could create a new income source for the platform by licensing its data to other firms. X is not currently using EU (European Union) user data for AI training due to Europe’s more stringent data permission laws, which will require X to come up with an explicit setting for EU users specifically.
X has also added stricter penalties for entities that are caught using large numbers of tweets. In a section on Privacy Policy titled ‘liquidated damages’ the company has mentioned that anyone viewing or accessing more than a million posts a day will be subject to a penalty of $15,000.
