Elon Musk wants to build “Grokipedia,” a new AI-powered rival to Wikipedia

Elon Musk has revealed that his AI company, xAI, is building Grokipedia — an ambitious alternative to Wikipedia. Musk posted on X: “We are building Grokipedia @xAI. Will be a massive improvement over Wikipedia. Frankly, it is a necessary step towards the xAI goal of understanding the Universe.”

Musk’s announcement follows his long-running critique of Wikipedia, which he has accused of bias and ideological slanting. Over the years, he’s referred to it as “Wokipedia,” discouraged donations to the platform, and questioned its editorial neutrality.

Grokipedia will be powered by Grok, xAI’s conversational AI, which already draws from public data, Wikipedia among them.  Musk frames Grokipedia as both a technological and philosophical counterpoint: correcting “falsehoods,” adding missing context, and overcoming perceived bias in Wikipedia.

Critics are raising red flags. An AI-driven encyclopedia faces serious risks: algorithmic bias, information manipulation, governance opacity, and the question of who vets the fact-checking.  Some commentators warn that Grokipedia may replicate flaws of Wikipedia under a new banner — especially if control over edits is centralised by xAI rather than dispersed among volunteer editors.

Meanwhile, in another post on X, Musk said he wants people to come and help build Grokipedia. "Join @xAI and help build Grokipedia, an open source knowledge repository that is vastly better than Wikipedia! This will be available to the public with no limits on use," he said in the post.

Wikipedia has been a foundational knowledge resource for two decades, built on community consensus and volunteer editing. Grokipedia, if realized, would shift the model: moving from human curation to AI-driven content creation and governance. The question: can an AI system maintain neutrality, transparency, and trust at scale?

Another layer is the political one. Musk’s clashes with Wikipedia are public and often ideological. Grokipedia could become a proxy battleground in debates over “truth,” bias, and control of information in the digital age.

Whether Grokipedia becomes a credible replacement or another Musk side project depends heavily on execution, transparency, and how it handles the unavoidable tension between knowledge, power, and trust.
