Elon Musk’s xAI has launched fresh legal action against OpenAI, alleging the company poached staff to obtain sensitive details about its technology, including its Grok chatbot and data centre plans. The case, filed in a California federal court, accuses OpenAI of inducing ex-employees to breach confidentiality agreements and hand over inside knowledge.
“OpenAI is targeting those individuals with knowledge of xAI’s key technologies and business plans—including xAI’s source code and operational advantages—then inducing those employees to breach their obligations,” the lawsuit claims, according to Reuters.
Among those named are former engineer Xuechen Li, who xAI had already accused in a separate case of taking confidential data to OpenAI, as well as ex-employee Jimmy Fraiture and a senior finance executive.
OpenAI rejected the allegations, dismissing the lawsuit as “the latest chapter in Mr. Musk’s ongoing harassment.”
This is just one strand of Musk’s growing legal war with OpenAI. He is also suing the firm over its switch to a for-profit model, while OpenAI has countersued him for harassment. Separately, xAI has accused Apple of conspiring with OpenAI to sideline competitors in the AI market.
The disputes underscore the ferocious competition for talent and intellectual property as Silicon Valley’s AI race accelerates. With Grok positioned as xAI’s answer to ChatGPT, the courtroom may become as pivotal as the lab in shaping the future of these rival platforms.
