There’s been a big shake-up in the world of AI startups. Just days after Google struck a major deal with Windsurf, another player, Cognition AI, has announced it is acquiring the rest of the company.
Here’s what happened: Google recently bought some of Windsurf’s top executives, including CEO Varun Mohan, and licensed some of the startup’s technology in a huge $2.4 billion deal. This move left many wondering what would happen to Windsurf’s remaining business.
Now, Cognition AI, the company behind the AI coding assistant Devin, has stepped in. They’ve officially signed a deal to buy Windsurf’s product, intellectual property, brand, and most importantly, its team.
“We’ve long admired Windsurf and what they’ve built,” said Scott Wu, Cognition’s co-founder. According to him, this deal isn’t just about adding a product, it’s about building the future of software engineering, where AI takes over repetitive tasks and lets humans focus on creativity.
With this acquisition, Cognition AI will get Windsurf’s coding platform, access to the latest Claude AI models, and a growing business bringing in $82 million in annual revenue. Windsurf’s tools are already being used by more than 350 enterprise customers and hundreds of thousands of daily users.
Cognition promises to keep all of Windsurf’s employees on board, offering them full financial benefits and making sure they are treated with respect. In the short term, the Windsurf team will continue their work as usual, but eventually, their technology will be integrated into Cognition’s products.
After Google grabbed the top talent, many thought Windsurf would fade out. But with this new deal, Cognition AI is giving it a fresh start and the battle to build the best AI tools for engineers is only heating up.
