Dell’s line up of laptops was rather confusing. There’s was the premium XPS series, which was rather clear. But beyond that? The Inspirons, the Latitudes, the Precisions — it was all a bit much to remember which series targeted which type of user. Not anymore. Dell has taken a bold step and ditched all its series of laptop names and replaced it with something simple. Some might argue that it’s too simple, where some might say that it is too ‘Apple’.
At an event ahead of CES 2025, Dell officially announced that going forward its laptops will be sold under Dell, Dell Pro and Dell Pro Max line up. Dell said that the idea behind the new branding is to make its product line up simple by having relatively straightforward names. Also, Dell said the company is going big on AI PCs and the new naming convention makes it simpler for consumers to understand what they will get.
“The PC is the most important personal productivity device of our lifetime and it is being transformed by AI,” said Michael Dell, chairman and CEO, Dell Technologies. “Our new, streamlined portfolio of AI PCs is here to deliver the future of computing," said the company CEO.
Dell's CEO is also aware that the PC era is at the cusp of one its biggest changes and the market is set to expand. He said that the global PC installed base has reached 1.5 billion units, many of which are aging and due for replacement. "With the upcoming end-of-life for Windows 10, the transition to AI-driven innovation is inevitable. At Dell Technologies, we are fully prepared to meet this demand," he added.
What the new names mean for Dell laptops
Dell’s idea is quite simple with the three new names for all its laptops. For starters, there’s Dell — suitable for school use or your ‘regular’ laptop work. Then there’s the Dell Pro — which is meant for professional-level work. It’s for those who want more than what a ‘regular’ laptop may offer. Finally, there’s the Dell Pro Max — it is for hardcore power users like 3D artists, professional music creators, video editors and more.
Dell’s renaming convention doesn’t stop at the series of laptops. In each series, there will be three clear — and distinct — tiers of products as well. So, there will be Base, Plus, Premium — indicating what the users will get and making it simple to know what kind of specs they want in a Dell laptop.
In a way, Dell has really simplified its series of laptops. Let’ face it, the Inspiron or Precision weren’t the best names either. Critics might argue that Dell has gone the Apple way of names but barring the XPS branding, not many would be shedding tears over the names Inspiron and G-series being killed off.
