Social media platform BlueSky has gained more than a million new users since the US presidential election and has skyrocketed to the No. 1 spot on the Apple App Store’s US chart this week. Moreover, a significant number of American social media users have left X (formerly known as Twitter), marking the largest exodus from the platform since its takeover by Tesla owner Elon Musk two years ago.
Bluesky grows as an alternative to X
According to a new report by CNN via Similarweb, more than one lakh users have deactivated their X accounts after the US presidential election. This shift follows Musk's influential role in the US presidential election as people seek other social media platforms. Therefore, X’s rival platform, Bluesky, has seen its user base double in the last 90 days, with more than 1 million new sign-ups in the past week.
Further, according to a new report by The New York Times, the majority of these new users on Bluesky are from the United States, Canada, and Britain. The micro-blogging site also confirmed on Wednesday that it has topped 15 million users. As mentioned earlier, it is at the top of the charts among all free apps in Apple's App Store, ahead of other popular free apps such as Threads, ChatGPT, Google, and TikTok.
According to the Guardian, Bluesky has become a refuge for people who want to have the simple kind of social media experience that Twitter used to provide. However, since Musk’s takeover of X, the far-right activism, misinformation amongst various posts, and multiple bot accounts have ruined the experience of many users, as they now flock towards Bluesky.
