AWS appoints Sandeep Dutta as India and South Asia president

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has appointed former Accenture India business lead Sandeep Dutta as its new president for India and South Asia, nearly a year after interim country head Vaishali Kasture had quit.

Jaime Valles, Vice President, Asia Pacific & Japan (APJ), AWS Global Sales who took over the additional charge of India operations -- after Kasture’s resignation -- posted the new development on LinkedIn on November 4.

Dutta comes with over two decades of experience with the IT services giant, having driven large-scale business transformations.

Valles said, “Sandeep understands the challenges and opportunities facing organizations in India. He's recognized as a thought leader on disruptive technologies, and his strategic vision has been pivotal in helping customers across industries reimagine what's possible.”

“Alongside the rest of our AWS APJ team, we'll work together to continue to help our customers harness the power of the cloud to enable cultural transformation, digital innovation, deliver value, and solve India’s hardest problems and biggest ambitions,” he added.

Dutta joins at a time when AWS is in the midst of driving its $12.7-billion (Rs 1,05,600 crore) investment in India by 2030, wherein the cloud services major will build data centres and infrastructure. The investment is expected to contribute about $23.3 billion (Rs 1,94,700 crore) in India’s GDP and support over 131,700 full-time equivalent jobs annually.

At the time of the announcement of this investment plan last year, Puneet Chandok was at the helm of AWS India and South Asia. Chandok later joined rival Microsoft to run its India business.

Valles highlighted that AWS’ cloud infrastructure has already contributed over Rs 30,900 crore ($3.7 billion) to India's GDP and supported more than 39,500 jobs.

“We're also committed to the sustainability of India’s digital future, investing in 50 renewable energy projects across the country. When completed, these projects will have a combined capacity to generate over 1.1 gigawatts of clean energy, powering both our operations and contributing to India's green energy goals,” he said.
