Apple released its first-generation AIrTag in 2021, an item tracker with Bluetooth that conveniently tracks the location of your lost items. In the past couple of years, there have been no updates or rumours about its successor. However, now we might see the impending launch of AirTag 2 next year.
AirTag 2: Expected specifications and features
According to a new report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new version of AirTag could be released by the middle of next year. Further, the new AirTag 2 will have a code number of B589 and Gurman states that currently it’s in the testing phase with Apple’s Asian partners.
He also said that it will have a better chipset and improved location tracking. This likely means that AirTag 2 will have the second-generation Ultra-Wideband (UWB) chipset, similar to the Apple iPhone 15 series and the latest Apple Watch series 9.
Additionally, 9to5Mac reports that this latest UWB chip will have a wider range of more than 60 meters, than the current generation’s limited range availability of 10 meters. This would for better precision in finding objects, similar to Apple’s Precision Finding, which was launched with the Apple iPhone 15.
The same report also suggests that the AirTag 2 could come in different shapes and sizes, than the traditional circular design found in the first-generation AirTag. Apple recently released improvements to the current AirTag with the latest iOS 17.5 update, which notifies users whenever a tracking device is in close proximity.
