It has been more than three years since Apple introduced AirTag, its tracking device. Since then the company has been conspicuously silent and there has been no upgrade at all. Now, a report by Bloomberg reveals that Apple is working on an upgrade and will launch new AirTag next year. Furthermore, it is expected that the AirTag will get a new ultra wide-band chip.
The report also mentions that the new chip will “considerably increase the range of the new AirTag.” What this means that it will become easier to find items that are attached to the AirTag. The current model of AirTag uses Precision Finding technology that can be located from about 10 to 30 metres. According to the report, the new AirGag will triple this range, courtesy the new ultra wide-band chip.
What is UWB technology?
Ultrawide-band (UWB) is a wireless communication technology that uses very short-range, high-frequency radio waves to transmit data. Unlike traditional wireless technologies like Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, UWB operates over a wide spectrum of frequencies, which allows it to deliver highly precise location and distance measurements.
One of UWB’s standout features is its accuracy. It can determine the position of an object to within a few centimetres — like in the case of the AirTag. UWB is also used in devices like smartphones, smart home gadgets, and car keys to enable features such as location tracking, keyless entry, and more.
UWB is also useful in environments with a lot of signal interference, as its broad frequency range makes it less prone to disruptions. It consumes very little power, making it suitable for devices that need long battery life.
It’s not clear when Apple will launch the next-generation of AirTag. The first wave of Apple products in 2025 are expected to arrive in March. Rumour has it that a new iPhone SE is in the works and could be Apple’s first device of 2025.
