Apple and its HomeKit solution for smartphone home devices has not been that popular among users as well as OEMs. To solve this, Apple adopted Matter technology. Recently, the company appears to be focusing on a lot of IoT devices and is rumoured to launch a new smart display. In the recent news, Apple is reportedly working on a smart doorbell that will feature the company’s tried and tested Face ID technology.
Mark Gurman’s report on Smart doorbell
In his recent Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has revealed that Apple is working on a smart doorbell that will come with Face ID support. Gurman has also mentioned that the company could make this official by the end of 2025.
According to the newsletter, Apple’s upcoming smart doorbell will work just like the iPhone’s lock screen by automatically unlocking it when you or another authorised resident looks at the door lock. As per the report, the smart lock will also come equipped with a Secure Enclave chip that Apple includes in its other devices for secure login and storing and processing the Face ID information. The chip also keeps the data separate from other system data to add to the overall data security.
Third-party integration
Not only this, Gurman has also highlighted that Apple will make it compatible with other third-party HomeKit smart locks and the company is also speculated to partner with some smart door makers to offer a complete solution from the beginning.
The smart lock is expected to rely on the company’s newly developed “Proxima” combination along with a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip that is also expected to come to the next-generation HomePod Mini and Apple TV devices next year.
Apple HomeKit smart door alternative
Currently, Apple only sells the Logitech Circle View Wired Doorbell on its website at $199.99. However, there are other third-party solutions available in the market that work with Apple HomeKit.
Apple and its smart home push
Apple has been trying to build a complete ecosystem of smart home devices. The initiative started with the HomePod and the introduction of the HomeKit solution. However, manufacturers relied on the more convenient Zigbee and Wi-Fi-based smart home devices that offer maximum compatibility with different platforms and smart home solutions. Matter technology adoption made things better for Apple to an extent. However, it looks like Apple is not planning to offer first-party solutions to users with its technology and chip integrated into them. If the news is true this could become a big add-on for Apple and even expand its ecosystem to more places.
