The dispute between artificial intelligence company Anthropic and the US Department of Defense has escalated into a legal battle, with the company planning to challenge the Pentagon in court. The development comes as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that governments should remain more powerful than private companies, highlighting a growing divide within the AI industry over military partnerships.
The controversy follows the Pentagon’s decision to label Anthropic a “supply-chain risk to national security,” a move that restricts the use of the company’s technology in defense projects.
Why Anthropic is taking the Pentagon to court
Anthropic said it plans to challenge the US government after the Department of Defense placed restrictions on the company’s AI models. The designation came after negotiations between the Pentagon and the company broke down over how its AI systems could be used.
The defense department wanted broader permissions to deploy Anthropic’s AI models in military programs. However, the company has maintained limits on certain uses, including applications linked to autonomous weapons systems and large-scale surveillance.
Anthropic’s leadership has argued that the designation is unjustified and harms the company’s ability to participate in government projects. As a result, the company said it has no choice but to challenge the decision legally.
Pentagon action and government response
The dispute intensified when US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth publicly labelled Anthropic a national security risk. Following that announcement, federal agencies were instructed to stop using the company’s technology in government systems.
The decision also raised concerns over existing contracts and partnerships involving Anthropic’s AI models. The move signaled a shift in how the US government evaluates AI providers involved in sensitive national security work.
Amid the escalating tensions, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed the issue during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference. Altman said that it would be harmful for society if private companies abandoned cooperation with democratic governments simply because of political disagreements.
“The government is supposed to be more powerful than private companies,” Altman said while speaking at the event.
The comment was widely viewed as a response to the dispute between Anthropic and the Pentagon.
The situation highlights a broader debate within the artificial intelligence sector about the role of private companies in defense work. Some companies are placing restrictions on how their AI systems can be used by military organizations, while others are choosing to cooperate more closely with governments.
The outcome of Anthropic’s legal challenge could shape how governments and AI companies work together in the development and deployment of advanced artificial intelligence systems.
