Chennai-based space tech startup Agnikul Cosmos, which made history with the successful launch of its maiden test launch vehicle, inspires the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to pledge support for private players in the ecosystem, the body's chairman S Somanath said on May 30.
Agnikul successfully launched the Agnibaan SOrTeD rocket on May 30 after four previous attempts were called off. The rocket is powered by India's first semi-cryogenic engine, using a mix of liquid and gas for propellant.
“The Department of Space and ISRO congratulates Agnikul Cosmos on the successful launch of 'Agnibaan - SOrTeD'. The success involving many firsts including 3D printed semi-cryogenic engine, flight control systems etc. demonstrate the prowess of indigenous design and innovation," Somanath said.
"It motivates ISRO to support the Space startups and non-governmental entities for innovation and atmanirbharata to create a vibrant space ecosystem in the country," Somanath added. Non-governmental entities are the name designated for private players in the space ecosystem," he added.
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is still developing a semi-cryogenic engine called the SCE-200 for its GSLV Mk III rocket.
Space regulator IN-SPACe also congratulated Agnikul for the successful launch. Pawan Goenka, Chairman of IN-SPACe, said, “The successful launch of the Agnibaan SOrTeD is not just a milestone for Agnikul Cosmos but marks a significant moment for private players who are contributing to growing India's space sector."
"Today it is the power of young innovators and entrepreneurs who are leading from the front, innovating with cutting-edge technology such as the world's first 3D printed semi-cryogenic engine, that is driving the transformation of India’s space sector. At IN-SPACe, we are committed to support these young pioneers as they help to propel India to a leadership position in the global space arena," he added.
