About 87 percent of engineers use artificial intelligence (AI) as an assistant in the workplace, according to a survey. The survey also revealed that 62 percent of modern engineers expect their career growth to be enhanced by AI and another 52 percent expect productivity to be enhanced.
IT company EPAM commissioned CyberMedia Research to conduct the survey named "From AI to Generative AI: Insights from a Modern Engineer Survey". It covered over 800 engineers aged 25 years and above, with skillsets cutting across data engineering, analytics, product and platform engineering, cloud transformation and migration, and others.
"AI serves as a catalyst for creative problem-solving, offering alternative approaches and solutions that engineers might not initially consider, thereby enhancing both the quality and relevance of their work," the report said.
The survey further found that the integration of AI in the engineering industry is poised to bring about significant changes, both in terms of job creation and job elimination. Roles focused on AI/Machine Learning (ML) model monitoring, data analysis, and the formation of cross-functional teams are anticipated to emerge.
However, the survey brings to light that certain job roles may become obsolete and lead to a significant shift in the workforce as it becomes clear that AI will handle more tasks.
"By equipping our engineers to become AI collaborators, not competitors, we will be able to unlock a new era of innovation and efficiency, where they leverage AI's power to automate mundane tasks, gain deeper data-driven insights, and focus on the truly creative and strategic aspects of engineering," Elaina Shekhter, Chief Marketing Officer, EPAM, was quoted as saying in the press release.
The study was conducted across the top eight cities of India including Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, etc.
The survey also reveals that AI is seen as a valuable tool, streamlining workflows through automation and offering valuable assistance, beyond just data analysis.
