Richa Ghosh was one of the key players in India's 2025 Women's World Cup victory. She is only 22, yet has already come to represent a new, fearless generation that wants to win international trophies rather than just compete.
That breakthrough is now expected to be etched into the hills of North Bengal. Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, has announced plans to name a new cricket stadium in Darjeeling district after Richa Ghosh. This might make it the first cricket stadium in India to be named after a woman cricketer.
Speaking at the wicketkeeper-batter's felicitation ceremony, Banerjee noted that the state has requested the local mayor to create designs for a cricket stadium on about 27 acres of land in the district. She suggested that the stadium be called "Richa Cricket Stadium" in order for future generations to remember and be motivated by her achievement.

The evening evolved into a larger celebration of Richa's World Cup achievements. Together with the state government, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), under the leadership of president Sourav Ganguly, honored her. Richa was given a gold-plated bat and ball signed by Ganguly and Jhulan Goswami, demonstrating how swiftly she has become a member of Bengal cricket greats.
Beyond ceremonial gifts, the West Bengal government has done more. In addition to receiving a gold chain and the Banga Bhushan award, Richa was named a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in the state, acknowledging her significance as a role model and her influence on sports.
Ganguly, on the other hand, praised her consistency and character, even referring to her as a future captain of India.
Meanwhile, the Darjeeling project would be a first if it proceeds as planned. In Visakhapatnam and Kolkata, India already has stands honoring Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami, but a stadium devoted to a female cricket player would make a significant impact.
