The Kolkata Knight Riders powered their way to a brilliant win at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium as they made short work of the 183 target the Royal Challengers Bengaluru set them for a win. The 7-wicket win came with 19 balls to spare as KKR become the first team to win away from home in IPL 2024. They are now second in the league with 4 points from 2 matches, just behind Chennai Super Kings on Net Run Rate.

Shreyas Iyer's six off Mayank Dagar over mid wicket cemented a brilliant win for Kolkata Knight Riders, who become the first away team to win in this year's IPL. A rank short ball was dispatched with ease by Shreyas, who goes deep in to his crease to flick it away on to the onside for a maximum!

RCB have picked the big wicket of Venkatesh Iyer after his slog to cow corner went straight to Kohli, who completes the easiest of catches. Kohli does not celebrate as the writing is on the wall, with KKR needing 16 runs from 29 balls. Venkatesh's innings comes to an end but not before putting his team in the driver's seat. He scored 50 of 30 balls, which included 3 boundaries and 4 big sixes.

Yash Dayal picks up the wicket off the first ball of the 16th over and with that dismissal, the umpire takes a time out. KKR 167/3 after 15.1 overs. Rinku Singh is the next batter in

Siraj is back in to the attack and he was welcomed in the most brutal way possible. A short of a length loosener from the fast bowler was dispatched with disdain by KKR's lanky leftie to the mid wicket boundary for a massive 6. The ball landed many a row in to the crowd. He reached his half century in 29 balls, his 8th 50 in IPL.

The over ended with Shreyas Iyer flicking Siraj between long on and cow corner for an effortless six. 17 runs of the over as KKR are 167/2 after 15 overs.

The body language of the RCB players says it all

Just 5 singles from Vyshak in the 12th over. RCB desperately needs wickets now. 137/2 after 12 overs

Venkatesh Iyer gets back up after receiving some medical attention for his back and hits another 4, albeit a lucky one. A well directed short ball from Joseph rapidly climbed on him and the KKR batter goes for a pull. It takes his top edge but it lands safely behind the keeper and races away to the boundary. KKR are 132/2 after 11 overs.

At the half way stage, KKR are 112/2 after 10 overs, need 71 runs to win from the remaining 10. At the crease are Venkatesh Iyer and captain Shreyas Iyer, who survived a drop chance in the 10th over. Vyshak was the unfortunate bowler; he conceded only 8 runs in the 10th over.

Shreyas Iyer gets a lifeline as Yash Dayal dropped an easy catch at wide fine leg. To add insult to injury, the ball went for a boundary.

After 2 great overs for RCB, the Knight Riders needed a release of pressure and Venkatesh Iyer provided one. Tossed up ball on middle and leg Mayank Dagar, Iyer dances down the track and meets it under his eyeline. He then lofts it over wide long on for a monster maximum

Both openers are now back in the hut as Salt is dismissed in the deep mid wicket boundary. A short ball from Vyshak angling into him and Salt goes for a pull. But his fierce shot goes straight to Cameron Green, who takes an easy catch. Big roar from Vyshak and Salt is gone for 30. Shreyas Iyer comes out to bat, joins Venkatesh Iyer

Left arm spinner Mayank Dagar comes into the attack and he makes an instant impact, bowling Narine out in the third ball of the over. A yorker on off stump and the ball crashes into the base of off stump. Venkatesh Iyer comes out to bat

The Knight Riders seem to be in a hurry to win tonight as Phil Salt and Sunil Narine destroyed the RCB bowlers in the first 6 overs. After the powerplay overs, KKR are 85 after 6 overs with the Yash Dayal over, the 6th of the innings, going for 21 runs. The umpires have called for a much needed time out for the bowling side.

Yash Dayal conceded only 7 runs in the 4th over, which comes as a big surprise the way the openers were going at.53/0 after 4 overs

Knight Riders have reached 50 without losing a wicket in 3.2 overs. Salt and Narine's big hits have dented the Royal Challengers's total

Faf brings in the rapid Alzarri Joseph in to the attack but Narine is not bothered by the pace of his fellow Caribbean mate. After a couple of quiet deliveries, Narine lofts Joseph for a 91 m six straight past the bowler. He repeats the feat just 2 balls later as Narine skies one to the long on boundary. The ball goes past the boundary rope, but only just. Still, another six in the over and another expensive over. RCB are 46/0 after 3 overs.

Left arm quick Yash Dayal is sharing the new ball from the other end. His first over goes for 13 runs including five wides and a boundary. KKR 32/0 after 2 overs

After scampering for a double in the first ball of the last over, Kohli hoiks Starc over mid wicket for a massive six in to the crowd the very next ball. Dinesh Karthik didn't want to be left behind as he flicks Starc for a six in the fine leg region. The 20th over went for 16 runs as RCB end with 182/6 in their 20 overs; Karthik was run out in the last ball of the innings.

After 2 dot balls, Dinesh Karthik hits Russell for a big six over long off. The West Indian had done well shaving the pace off his deliveries and not giving the batsmen anything to work with. However, the one ball Russell bowls with pace was a full pitched one outside off stump, which DK duly drives through for a flat six in to the crowd. DK repeated the feat 2 balls later as he ended the over with a pull shot six over long on. The 19th over went for 13 runs.

The 18th over from Harshit Rana was a sucessful on as the quick bowler finishes his spell with a final over that went for just 5 runs and got 1 wicket

It could have been an even better over for the West Indian had Varun Chakaravarthy held on to a catch at short third man. Regardless, just 7 runs from the burly West Indian. RCB 148/4 after 17 overs

Andre Russell used his slower ball to good effect as Rajat Patidar is out caught at cow corner. He lofts Russell in an attempt for a six, but the lack of pace does not carry the ball far enough. Rinku Singh completes another catch. Anuj Rawat at the crease

Mitchell Starc's over went for just 7 runs as RCB are 141/3 after 16 overs. While the over ended with a beautiful lofted drive by Kohli for a boundary, the first five balls saw Starc starve the batters for pace with some off cutters. Umpire have called a time out.

The 15th over, bowled by Narine, goes for 10 runs. After getting Maxwell out caught in the first ball, KKR almost got a second wicket in the over after Kohli attempted 2 runs in the 5th ball. He had to put in a full length dive as Rinku Singh's throw from the deep almost catches Kohli out short. RCB 134/3 after 15 overs

Glenn Maxwell's luck finally runs out as he out caught in the offside boundary by Rinku Singh. Maxwell cuts Sunil Narine's short ball in the air but a running Rinku Singh makes no mistake. Maxwell is out for 28 (19), Rajat Patidar walks out to bat

Maxwell gets a second life after hitting a six to long on off Harshit Rana. After his hoik just goes over the long on fielder, Maxwell mistimes a slog as the slower ball gets his outside edge. However, Sunil Narine at short third man drops an absolute sitter. To compound things, Maxwell punishes the mistake by hitting a four in the very next ball. He guides a full pitches Rana delivery past point to the offside boundary. 15 runs came from the over, RCB 124/2 after 14 overs

Maxwell goes high into the night sky but not long enough, even for the small boundaries at the Chinnaswamy. Ramandeep gets around from deep midwicket but fails to hang on to a sitter. Narine still has to wait for his 500th T20 wicket. How costly will this drop prove?

Only 5 runs from the over, RCB 109/2 after 13 overs.

Back-to-back half centuries as Virat Kohli goes to yet another 50. He hit Varun Chakaravarthy for a huge six to his favourite region, mid wicket, before taking the single to reach his milestone. This 12th over seems to have released some pressure for RCB as Chakarvarthy concedes 17 runs in the over. In addition to the six, KKR conceded 2 boundaries to Glenn Maxwell in the over. Very very good from Andre Russell as he concedes only 2 runs from the over, one of which was a 1 bye of the last ball. The West Indian medium pacer is mixing up his speed and length, and is giving absolutely nothing away for either Virat Kohli or Glenn Maxwell. It's been 13 balls since the last boundary, and only 26 runs since the power play. RCB are 87/2 after 11 overs

Just 3 runs from that Chakaravarthy over. 10 overs of the first innings are done as RCB are 85/2 at the midway point.

After conceding only 2 runs in the first 4 balls of the overs with some slower balls, Russell was hoiked for a six in the deep square leg region in to the crowd. However, Russell had the last laugh as he castles Green who went for another six. Cameron Green is out for 33 (21). RCB 82/2 after 9 overs

Glenn Maxwell comes out to bat, mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy is introduced in to the attack.

Virat Kohli hoists Sunil Narine to the mid wicket region with a clean slog sweep in to the crowd. 10 runs came off this over. RCB 74/1 after 8 overs

Left arm spinner Anukul Roy has made a good start to the game, with his second over going for only 3 runs. RCB 64/1 after 7 overs

RCB have scored 61/1 after the first six overs as Cameron Green and Virat Kohli steady the ship with some big hits to the fences. The 6th over, bowled by spinner Sunil Narine went for 15 runs courtesy 2 boundaries and a six from Green.

The duo has steadied the ship after initial hiccups, which saw them almost being run out on 3 different occasions.

The RCB starman seems to be winning the Kohli vs Starc battle as he hit the Australian bowler for a huge six over mid wicket before getting some lady luck with an inside edge, which missed the stumps and went for a boundary. Green's outside edge in the last ball of the over gave him a boundary in the vacant third man region. RCB are 34/1 after 3 overs.

New fast-bowling sensation Harshit Rana got the big wicket of Faf du Plessis one ball after conceding a six to the South African batter and RCB skipper. In the fifth ball of the second over of the innings, du Plessis used Rana's rapid pace to ramp the ball behind the wicket keeper for a six. However, Rana had the last laugh as he slowed down his pace in the very next ball and baited du Plessis to play the same shot, which he did. This time thought, Mitchell Starc was waiting at short fine leg to complete an easy catch.

The Starc vs Kohli got off to a flyer for the latter as RCB got off the mark with a boundary of the first ball. A back of a good length ball from Starc gets Kohli's outside edge and the ball raced away to the third man boundary. 7/0 after 1 over

Alzarri Joseph: "It's a pretty good wicket. It's important to stay consistent with the hard lengths. It's a good cricket wicket. You can go the distance if you are not consistent. I have been enjoying the pre-season games here. [Rinku and Russell] We know what we want to do but I won't be saying what exactly."

Venkatesh Iyer: "It's always good to come to Chinnaswamy. RCB are playing, we want to be the first team to take back two points from away games. The game was as good as highlights, some sensational hitting. The batters identified the pitch was a belter. It's the batters' job to identify what a good score on a given track is and bat accordingly. If you know it's a flat track, you have to go out there and carry on the moment. It is important to assess the conditions and it is a skillful format for batters as well. [On Maxwell] We would love it if he misses out one more game. They have got some amazing batters, we sit and assess the opposition players and where to bowl and where not to bowl."

"It is the centre wicket - 61m square boundaries. Last game, we saw a number of wickets going pace-off a lot. It may be something that happen today too," says Ian Bishop.

Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar looks at the good length spot on the surface and says that it is a bit loose there. "It will come apart a bit and will help the ball turn. Pace-off will work, but those are on a shorter length. Spinners should get more purchase," he says.

Australian batter Steve Smith, who is working as a TV analyst in this year's IPL, said that Mitchell Starc will attack the RCB batters' outside edge while angling it away in the same manner in which England's Sam Curran did so in the last match. However, the Aussie left arm quick has more pace to boast, which will trouble RCB. Smith said, "I quite like [Starc's] match-up to Virat, the ability to swing the ball back down the line as a lefty. We have seen him [Kohli] get out on a few occasions to Shaheen Afridi, Trent Boult, Mohammad Amir. In the first game against Punjab Kings, Kohli had an opportunity off Sam Curran dropped at slip. So I quite like the left-handed match-up."

The 'Big Show' has faced only six balls in the 2 games so far and has scored only 3 runs before being dismissed in both matches. The opening fixture of the 17th Indian Premier League (IPL) marked Virat Kohli's return to cricket after a period of about two months during which he celebrated the birth of his second child on February 15, 2024. As it turned out, though, King Kohli's 20-ball 21 in that match against five-time winners and defending champions, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), under new CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, couldn't help the Bengaluru franchise much in Match 1 of IPL 2024. The Knight Riders hold superiority in the 32 meetings between the two franchises. While KKR have won 18 games, RCB have emerged victorious on 14 occasions. In the last five fixtures, KKR have dominated the Challengers with four wins compared to a solitary victory for the latter.

Mitchell Starc, the costliest buy in the history of the IPL, will be eager to perform at his best against his former employees after enduring a horrendous outing with the ball. Starc, bought for a whopping Rs 24.75 crore, leaked 53 runs in his quota of four overs and failed to bag a wicket.

However, KKR veteran all-rounder Andre Russell will be in focus for his current form and his record at the M Chinnaswamy stadium.

The Knight Riders were lucky to get off the mark in their opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad. If not for a brave effort from impact sub Ramandeep Singh, Rinku Singh, and Andre Russell, they would've failed to reach a competitive total against the Sunrisers. Shreyas Iyer, Nitish Rana and Venkatesh Iyer all failed to fire in the opener, resulting in a collapse that KKR can ill afford in the coming matches.

The usually consistent Faf du Plessis has failed to lead from the front in his two unsuccessful outings with the bat. Glenn Maxwell and his Aussie compatriot Cameroon Green are yet to get going in the tournament. Talented Indian batter Rajat Patidar also looked out-of-sorts in the first two games. Dinesh Karthik is the only player to have delivered the goods in both matches. But contribution from the top and middle order is the need of the hour for the Men in Red.

RCB's bowling department, too, needs a marked improvement after conceding 175+totals in the first two matches.

After a forgettable outing against the Chennai Super Kings in the tournament opener, Virat Kohli bounced back brilliantly by hitting a match-winning fifty on a testing Chinnaswamy pitch while chasing a 177-run target against PBKS. But bar Kohli, none of the top-order RCB batters has found form in the opening two games.

While RCB eked out a 4-wicket win over Punjab Kings, KKR edged past Sunrisers Hyderabad by four runs in a nail-biter. Both teams would be happy to have gotten off the mark in the 17th edition of the cash-rich league but a lot of questions remain unanswered.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders might have tasted victories in their previous fixtures, but both teams are yet to find a winning formula to keep their campaigns in cruise mode.
