Ajinkya‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Rahane has seen it all in international cricket - the glory of leading India to a historic Test victory in Australia as well as the disappointment of being ignored despite giving his years of the dedication. The seasoned batsman understands the significance of keeping his cool in the mix of a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows.

After playing a marvelous innings of 159 for Mumbai against Chhattisgarh in the Ranji Trophy on Sunday (October 26), Rahane briefly took time out to offer some sincere guidance to Sarfaraz Khan who is still waiting for a national team call despite his excellent performances in domestic cricket.

Speaking to The Indian Express after his innings, Rahane said, “The only thing I can tell him is don’t get distracted or frustrated. It is very easy to say but very hard to do. Just focus on your cricket and keep scoring runs. He has been doing that really well. As a player, when you go through this phase, it is challenging and tough, but keep your head down and control what you can.”

Rahane’s statement was heavily laden with experience. At 37, he has undergone a similar situation, as he was left out of the India’s Test tour of Australia in the 2024–25 season despite good performances in domestic cricket and a commendable outing in the 2023 World Test Championship ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌final.

Reflecting on his 42nd first-class century, Rahane acknowledged his disappointment but chose to remain composed. “I thought an experienced player like me should get more chances. There was no communication. I was ready for the Australia series,” he said.

The veteran batter also dismissed any notion that age played a part in his exclusion. “It is not about age. It is about intent, passion and how much effort you are willing to give for red-ball cricket. Experience matters. Look at Michael Hussey. He made his Test debut in his 30s and still scored plenty of runs,” Rahane said.
