Shah Rukh Khan, co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders, shared his heartfelt concern for Rishabh Pant in the wake of the cricketer's severe car accident two years ago. The incident, which occurred near Roorkee, Uttarakhand in 2022, left Pant with multiple injuries. Initially treated at a hospital in Dehradun, he was later airlifted to Mumbai for further care under the guidance of a BCCI-appointed specialist. The wicketkeeper-batter underwent several surgeries to repair the ligaments in his right knee and completed his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. Pant made a commendable return to cricket at the IPL 2024.
During a match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals, Shah Rukh Khan expressed his shock and concern in a video message. "That was horrifying. I saw that video (of his car). It was horrifying! Because we didn't know then, what was the result of that accident. So, you get the worst feelings. To me, these boys are like my own sons. I have youngsters in my team as well. I hoped he wasn't injured badly," he said, indicating the depth of his reaction upon seeing the footage of Pant's accident.
Shah Rukh Khan also spoke about the challenges athletes face when injured, highlighting the double jeopardy of their situation. "And a sportsman getting injured, it's a double jeopardy. Worse than that, us getting injured. I wish him all the best. I hope his knee gets fully recovered soon. In the last game, when I met him, I was telling him don't get up, it must be hurting. I was hugging him and asking are you well? I had not seen him before that, post the accident. I am really happy that he's back, playing well and I hope he keeps on playing well," he added.
The interaction between Shah Rukh Khan and Rishabh Pant captured the attention of IPL fans, particularly during an unforgettable moment at Vizag. After a match where Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Delhi Capitals, Shah Rukh attended the game to congratulate the players. As Pant stood up to greet him, Shah Rukh insisted he remain seated, reflecting his concern for Pant’s condition. The exchange ended with a warm hug, symbolising a poignant moment of support and encouragement.
On the field, Pant continued to show resilience and skill. In a challenging match at Eden Gardens, Pant led Delhi Capitals as they struggled, managing to score 27 runs from 20 balls. Despite the team's difficulties, Pant's performance this season has been strong, with him becoming the fourth-highest run-getter in IPL 2024.
The bond between Shah Rukh and Pant, amidst the challenges, reflects the spirit of bond and resilience prevalent in the sport.
