Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol mark 30 years of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and received a big tribute in Leicester Square. The actors have unveiled a bronze statue commemorating their iconic roles in the 1995 film in a historic moment on Thursday.

DDLJ becomes the first Indian film to receive recognition as part of the celebrated Scenes in the Square trail. The statue features DDLJ’s lead characters Raj and Simran in a signature pose.

DDLJ’s statue is the 11th character installation in the Scenes in the Square trail, joining some of the popular names, including Harry Potter, Mary Poppins, Paddington and Singin’ in the Rain.

Besides Shah Rukh and Kajol, Yash Raj Films CEO Akshaye Widhani and Heart of London Business Alliance chief executive Ros Morgan also attended the unveiling of the statue.

During the launch ceremony, Shah Rukh Khan said, “DDLJ was made with a pure heart. We wanted to tell a story about love, how it can bridge barriers and how the world would be a better place if it had a lot of love in it, and I think this is why ‘DDLJ’ has had a lasting impact for over 30 years now.”

King Khan added, “Personally, ‘DDLJ’ is part of my identity, and it is humbling to see the film, and Kajol and me, receiving so much love since it was released.”

Kajol also talked about the milestone moment and added, “It’s incredible to see ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ continue to receive so much love, even 30 years later. Watching the statue being unveiled in London felt like reliving a piece of our history – a story that has truly travelled across generations.”

For the unversed, the Leicester Square location holds a special significance for the film as the place was featured in one of the opening scenes where Raj and Simran accidentally bump into each other before they both travel to Europe. The scene shows two of the square's historic cinemas: Raj is in front of the Vue, while Simran walks by the Odeon Leicester Square.
