Gautam Gambhir is back in the radar as far his coaching credentials is concerned after yet another whitewash in a home Test series. The latest setback comes after the South Africa debacle where Temba Bavuma-led Proteas beat India 2-0 in a two-match series.
India endured a 30-run loss at Eden Gardens, where the team failed to chase 124 in the fourth innings. This was followed by a 408-run humiliation in Guwahati, hosting its first-ever Test.
India have mostly been in the wrong end as far as the red ball format is concerned under Gambhir's coaching. The team were beaten 3-0 by New Zealand at home, which was followed by a 1-3 loss Down Under in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. This cost India their spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final.
India have managed series wins against Bangladesh and West Indies both at home but it is far from a badge of honour that Gambhir would like to sport. In fact his biggest achievement so far has been in the Summer when India travelled to England for a gruelling five-match series. Then India produced a good fight and ended the series with a 2-2 scoreline despite most of the squad members traveling to England for the first time for a Test series.
In the wake of recent results, Gambhir was asked if he thinks he is "the right man for the job in Test cricket" during the post-match press conference in Guwahati on Wednesday.
The coach was straightforward in his response but highlighted the fact that the team is in a transition mode before pointing out the success in England and major white-ball tournaments.
"It is for the BCCI to decide. Indian cricket is important, I am not important. I am the same guy who got results in England, won Champions Trophy and Asia Cup. This is a team which is learning," he said.
