  • Two giant oarfish spotted near Cabo San Lucas shoreline in Mexico.
  • Oarfish sightings are extremely rare and draw scientific interest.
  • Oarfish are the longest bony fish, reaching up to 30 feet long.

In an unusual marine sighting, two giant Oarfish were spotted close to the shoreline in Cabo San Lucas. This is a coastal city in Mexico. The rare encounter has drawn widespread attention.

These mysterious deep-sea fish are almost never seen near the ocean’s surface and it have emerged once again and this time its two of them!

The beachgoers first noticed one oarfish struggling near the shore. While people were still helping the fish back into deeper water, they spotted another oarfish nearby, making the situation even more extraordinary.

A Mysterious Giant of the Deep Sea

Oarfish are among the most mysterious creatures in the ocean. They live in the deep ocean layers, usually at depths of around 3,000 feet (about 900 metres) where sunlight barely reaches.  Oarfish can reach up to 30 feet (about 9 metres) long, making them the longest bony fish known to exist in the ocean.

Their bodies are long and ribbon-like with a silvery appearance and a distinctive bright red dorsal crest running along the head and back.

Extremely Rare Sightings Along the Coast

According to the video spreading across social media, the coastline around Cabo San Lucas has recorded only a handful of oarfish sightings over the past few centuries. This makes the appearance of two oarfish in the same area at the same time particularly remarkable.

Marine scientists say such events offer rare opportunities to learn more about the biology and behaviour of these elusive deep-sea creatures.

Why They Are Called ‘Doomsday Fish’?

Oarfish are often nicknamed “doomsday fish” in popular culture. In some coastal traditions, especially in parts of Asia, their sudden appearance near the surface has historically been linked to earthquakes or other natural disasters.

However, scientists stress that there is no scientific evidence connecting oarfish sightings to earthquakes or catastrophic events.

A Glimpse Into the Deep Ocean

Although mysterious and rarely seen, oarfish play an important role in deep-sea ecosystems. As, they inhabit such remote depths, scientists still know relatively little about their life cycle and behaviour.

Every rare sighting, such as the recent encounter in Mexico, provides valuable insights into one of the ocean’s most unusual inhabitants.

For now, the sighting of two giant oarfish near the shore remains a fascinating reminder of how much of the deep ocean still remains unexplored.
