A large asteroid, approximately 1,300 feet wide, is set to approach Earth on October 12. Known as 363027 (1998 ST27), it will pass at a safe distance of 2.2 million miles. Despite its immense size, NASA confirms there’s no immediate risk posed by the asteroid.
Asteroids, also referred to as minor planets, orbit within our solar system. These rocky remnants date back 4.6 billion years, from the system’s formation. Unlike planets, they have no atmosphere and vary greatly in size and composition.
NASA Monitors Asteroid Movements
NASA uses advanced observation techniques and modelling to track asteroid paths. This helps scientists predict possible threats. In the past, asteroid impacts have caused significant geological changes. A notable example is the Chicxulub impact, which led to the extinction of the dinosaurs 66 million years ago.
The Importance of Studying Asteroids
Space agencies like NASA focus on identifying potentially hazardous asteroids (PHAs). Although 363027 (1998 ST27) is not considered a threat, studying its approach can provide valuable data. Researchers can enhance prediction methods to safeguard Earth from future impacts. Understanding these celestial bodies is essential for planetary safety.
